Song: Mississippi Mud
Written by Harry Barris, James CavanaughBix Beiderbecke’s classic Dixieland arrangement of “Mississippi Mud” was released in 1928. Opening with a stellar horn solo from Beiderbecke, this recording featured both male and female vocalists paying tribute to the glories of the Old South. “Mississippi Mud” was written by Harry Barris and James Cavanaugh. Vocalist Bing Crosby appeared on two separate hit versions of this song in 1928: bandleader Paul Whiteman’s, which climbed to No. 6; and jazz saxophonist Frankie Trumbauer’s, which peaked at No. 18. Bob Crosby, Bing’s brother, also covered the song with his band in 1953.
