| From his first million-selling record of "Woodchopper's Ball" in 1939, to his Grammy Award in 1973, to his death in 1987, WOODY HERMAN was a big band man, supporting large ensembles regardless of popular preferences or financial difficulties. As a child he toured with his parents as "The Boy Wonder of the Clarinet," and he developed a style of his own throughout his life, playing with various big bands which were all called "the Herd" by the press and public. He produced a string of hits in the 40's, including "Apple Honey," "Caldonia," and the "Ebony Concerto," which Igor Stravinsky wrote especially for the Herd in 1946.
