| The "Sentimental Gentleman of Swing," TOMMY DORSEY (b. Shenandoah, PA, Nov. 19, 1905; Greenwich, CT, Nov. 26) shared a band with his brother Jimmy until 1934, when they argued and Tommy assumed leadership of the Joe Haymes band in New York. With this band, Tommy created a mix of swing and sweet music, featuring his own mellow trombone solos and the performances of many other big stars, including Frank Sinatra, who sang with the band from 1940-1942. Aside from several other film appearances, Dorsey's band appeared in the1947 film The Fabulous Dorseys, which featured both Dorsey brothers. The brothers later reunited in 1953, but Tommy's most memorable work was done in the 30's and 40's. |
