Two of the best recordings by legendary vocal group the Platters are of Shapiro Bernstein songs: "My Prayer" (No. 1 for five weeks in 1956) and "Red Sails In The Sunset" (No. 36 in 1960). Featuring the fiery lead vocals of Tony Williams (b. Elizabeth, NJ, April 5, 1928), the Platters' intricate, inimitable harmonies are among the greatest vocal recordings of the 1950s and 1960s. The Platters were the first African-American act of their generation to reach #1 on the pop charts. Other original members of the group included David Lynch (tenor), Paul Robi (baritone), Herb Reed (bass) and Zola Taylor.
