The Ink Spots (original lineup: Jerry Daniels; Orville "Hoppy" Jones; Ivory "Deek" Watson; Charlie Fuqua) were one of America's favorite vocal groups in the 1940s and laid the foundation for the "doo-wop" music of the 1950s. In the late 1930s, singer Bill Kenny (b. 1915; d. March 23, 1978) replaced Jerry Daniels, and his soulful lead vocals helped the group find immediate success. Their 1939 recording of "My Prayer," climbed to No. 3. The Ink Spots' many hits include a lovely rendition of "Memories Of You," which went Top 40 in 1940; in 1951, they recorded a stellar vocal arrangement of the classic love song "If."
