Barbra Streisand (b. Brooklyn, NY April 24, 1942) is an accomplished singer, actor, director, and producer. Streisand's professional career began after winning a local show. In 1961 she appeared in an off-Broadway play that didn't last, but landed her a gig at the Blue Angel Club. In 1962, she was offered a role in the Brodway production I Can Get It For You Wholesale. When the play closed Streisand was received offers from nightclubs, television, Broadway producers and record companies. She has appeared in over a dozen films to date, including: Hello Dolly!(1969); The Way We Were (1973); The Main Event (1979); Yentl (1983); and The Prince of Tides (1991), which she also directed and co-produced.

In 1987 Streisand was awarded a Grammy for best female pop vocalist for The Broadway Album. In 1992 she signed a $60-million agreement with Sony Corporation to make records and films.
