Violinist/pianist Stephane Grappelli (b. Paris, France, January 26, 1908; d. December 1, 1997) began playing with jazz great Django Reinhardt in 1934 and continued in his band for five years. During WWII jazz was banned by the Nazis when they occupied Paris, so Grappelli fled to London. When the war ended, he toured the world for the next forty years playing and recording with such diverse musicians as violinist Yehudi Menuhin, jazz pianist Oscar Peterson and virtuoso mandolinist David Grisman.
