Pictured here without his trademark sunglasses, ROY ORBISON (b. Vernon, TX, April 23, 1936; d. Nashville, TN, Dec. 6, 1988) started his career writing country-tinged songs for the Everly Brothers and others. With the release of "Only the Lonely" in 1960, he kicked off a string of 60's rock ballads that featured his distinctive, soaring voice, including "Runnin' Scared" (1961) and "It's Over" (1964). He also recorded a handful of rockers like "Oh, Pretty Woman," which Van Halen revamped in the 80's. After recording with the Travelling Wilburys supergroup in the late 80's, he released Mystery Girl, but his popular resurgence was cut short by his death a few weeks thereafter.
