Since he owned his own barbershop, it is appropriate that PERRY COMO (b. Canonsburg, PA, May 18, 1912) started singing in a barbershop quartet. In 1933 he sold his store and hit the road in search of a career in entertainment, and he soon found a place in the Ted Weems Orchestra. Como toured with Weems, gaining national attention, from 1936 until the orchestra broke up in 1942. He then went solo and, in a period of fourteen years, amassed forty-two top-ten hits with his casual, relaxed vocal style. He also appeared in several movies, and hosted a TV show from 1955 to 1963. In 1970, he resumed touring, which he carries on today.
