PEGGY LEE (b. Jamestown, ND, May 26, 1920) was first discovered in Chicago by Benny Goodman, and within a couple of years she had delivered the million-selling hit "Why Don't You Do Right?" (1942). The next year, she went solo with Goodman's guitarist, Dave Barbour, as her husband and songwriting partner. Together they penned "Manana (Is Good Enough for Me)," which topped the charts in 1948. She also wrote the scores for two movies, Lady and the Tramp (with Sonny Burke,1952) and Tom Thumb (1958). Her jazz stylings and compositional abilities kept her popular throughout the 40's and 50's, and she appeared on TV and in movies into the 70's.
