| When a drunk heckled a jazz trio in the early 40's and demanded that the pianist sing, he unwittingly launched the career of one of America's most memorable vocalists. While NAT "KING" COLE's (b. Montgomery, AL Mar. 17, 1917; d. Santa Monica, CA Feb. 15, 1965) singing garnered the trio a fair amount of popularity, it was his solo work in the 50's and 60's, including TV and screen appearances like St. Louis Blues (1958), that would make him a true star, with top-ten selling records such as Love is the Thing (1957), Wild is Love (1960), and Ramblin' Rose (1962). Today's younger audience knows him best through his posthumous 1991 duet with his daughter, Natalie, which won her a Grammy. |
