Beneath the shifting, turbulent trends of popular music, LAWRENCE WELK (b. Strasburg, ND, Mar. 11, 1903; d. May 17, 1992) has quietly and affably delivered "Champagne Music" to a throng of devoted fans for over fifty years. Leading his modest but capable band with his accordion and affected accent, Welk found an audience through touring in the 30's, TV appearances in the 50's, and a regular TV show in the 60's. When the show was canceled by ABC in 1971, he syndicated his show and continued to please his quietly contented following for many years with his blend of mellow swing.
