JUNE CARTER first worked with Johnny Cash in the early 60's, when she toured with him on several occasions. including the 1966 tour of England that broke the Beatles' attendance records in their hometown of Liverpool. In 1967 they recorded "Jackson" and "Guitar Pickin' Man" together, and, despite his drug and alcohol abuse problems, Johnny was interested in marriage. June agreed to marry Cash if he would undergo treatment for substance abuse and depression. Cash acquiesced, embraced a brand of mellow evangelistic Christianity, and the two were married, forming the nucleus of one of country music's foremost families.
