James Brown (b. Barnwell, SC, May 3, 1928) grew up in rural Georgia and, escaping poverty and obscurity, became a giant in the music business as a singer, producer, songwriter and leader of one of the world's most acclaimed R&B bands. Brown, nicknamed the "Godfather of Soul," first appeared on the national music charts in 1956, and he continued to have hits through the 1980s. James Brown's husky impassioned singing voice is one of the most recognizable in popular music, and he is considered an originator of "soul" music.
