Elvis Presley (b. Tupelo, MS, January 8, 1935; d. August 16, 1977) was known as the "King of Rock and Roll." Presley was a trend-setter, a trail-blazer and a one-man advertisement for a new kind of music called rock and roll. His recording career began in Memphis with Sam Phillips' "indie" Sun Records in 1954. RCA bought his contract in 1955, and Elvis starred in his first feature film in 1956. By the time of his death, Presley had been one of the hottest international singing stars for over twenty years. He was the most successful popular recording artist of his generation.
