Dinah Washington (b. Ruth Lee Jones, Tuscaloosa, AL, August 29, 1924; d. December 14, 1963) was a brilliant vocalist who truly transcended any category. Although accomplished at jazz and pop, she was best-known as a R&B singer; in that field, she had so many hits that she was nicknamed "the Queen of the Jukebox." Early in her career, Washington sang with jazz great Lionel Hampton's band. She subsequently recorded as a solo artist for Mercury Records and had almost thirty R&B hits from 1949 to 1961. Her compelling life story was portrayed in the Broadway musical Dinah Was.
