BETTE MIDLER (b. Paterson, NJ Dec. 1, 1945) wanted to be an entertainer so much that she left her childhood home in Hawaii to strike out for the chillier climes of New York City in 1966. There, she launched a stage career, and began singing with Barry Manilow. In 1979 she starred in The Rose, making the title-song into a hit. Her screen career took precedence over her singing until 1988, when Bette starred in Beaches, the first film to be released through her own All Girl Productions. The film's original soundtrack - her first music release in six years - put Midler's recording career back on the fast track. The RIAA triple platinum "BEACHES" was highlighted by the RIAA platinum single, "Wind Beneath My Wings," which earned Bette and producer Arif Mardin the 1989 Grammy Award for Record Of The Year, Bette's fourth.
