Art Tatum (b. Toledo, OH, October 13, 1909; d. November 5, 1956) has been called the greatest jazz pianist of this century by many jazz critics. Tatum, who was legally blind, began his recording career in 1933. By 1940, he had scored two Top 20 pop instrumentals for Decca Records. Tatum continued to record legendary jazz sessions and tour until his death.
