Artie Shaw (b. Arthur Arshawsky, New York, NY, May 23, 1910) is considered one of the finest clarinetists of the swing era. Shaw formed his own band in 1936 after playing as a sideman in many jazz combos. By 1938, Artie Shaw and his Orchestra were one of the hottest live attractions. Shaw's recording career began in 1936 and, for fifteen years, imaginative arrangements and impeccable musicianship kept him at the top of the charts with 48 Top 40 pop hits.
