SKOKIAAN [performance by Herb Alpert & Hugh Masekela] is a South African song named for a Zulu tribal drink. Six different hit versions were released in 1954: by Ralph Marterie (No. 3), The Four Lads (No. 7), The Bulawayo Sweet Rhythms Band (No. 17), Ray Anthony (No. 18), Perez Prado (No. 26) and Louis Armstrong (No. 29). Six years later a lively, rocking rendition was recorded by Bill Haley and His Comets (No. 70). In 1978 two great horn players, Herb Alpert and Hugh Masekela, teamed up to record the charming version of Skokiaan that is featured here.

Harry James and His Orchestra, along with vocalist Frank Sinatra, recorded ON A LITTLE STREET IN SINGAPORE [performance by the Manhattan Transfer] on October 13, 1939 - nearly five years before their recording became a hit in 1944. Written by Billy Hill and Peter DeRose,ON A LITTLE STREET IN SINGAPORE was a greater success in 1940 for Jimmy Dorsey and His Orchestra and was also recorded by the Grammy-winning vocal group Manhattan Transfer in 1978.
