SKOKIAAN is a South African song named for a Zulu tribal drink. Six different
hit versions were released in 1954: by Ralph Marterie (No. 3), The Four Lads
(No. 7), The Bulawayo Sweet Rhythms Band (No. 17), Ray Anthony (No. 18),
Perez Prado (No. 26) and Louis Armstrong (No. 29). Six years later a lively,rocking rendition was recorded by Bill Haley and His Comets (No. 70). In
1978 two great horn players, Herb Alpert and Hugh Masekela, teamed up to
record the charming version of Skokiaan that is featured here.
