Johnnie Ray's emotion-packed performance of CRY [performance by Johnnie Ray] launched his singing career in 1951, climbing straight to the top of the charts and staying there for eleven weeks. It eventually sold over two million copies. Dozens of artists have recorded this tearjerker since then, and several versions have become pop or country hits. Among the most notable: recordings by Georgia Gibbs (1951), Eileen Barton (1952), The Four Knights (1952), Lynn Anderson(1972) and Crystal Gayle (No. 1/country - 1986). Other pop and R&B artists who've covered this ballad include Roy Orbison, Ray Charles and Sam Cooke.
