Big band leader Russ Morgan co-wrote the wistful ballad SO LONG [performance by Ruth Brown] in 1940, the year it became the debut hit of The Charioteers, a Cincinnati-based vocal group. The Four Aces also scored with the song in 1954, but it was Ruth Brown, in her recording debut for Atlantic Records in 1949, who sang the definitive version. Brown's torchy delivery helped push the tune to the No. 6 spot on the Billboard R&B chart. Three other important versions of So Long have turned up on the R&B hit parade over the years: those by Johnny Moore's Three Blazers (1946), Fats Domino (1956) and Roy Hamilton (1957). Pat Benatar also recorded this song in 1991.

Although written by British bandleader Ray Noble, CHEROKEE [performance by Charlie Barnet] became a hit for and the theme of American tenor saxophonist Charlie Barnet and His Orchestra. The swinging Barnet recording climbed to No. 15 in the fall of 1939. Later the tune was also covered by the big bands of Harry James, Duke Ellington and Jackie Gleason. Another outstanding performance of this classic jazz number was recorded by saxophonist Earl Bostic in 1952.

"Strike up the music," sang the ever-popular Andrews Sisters, "the band has begun the PENNSYLVANIA POLKA [performance by The Andrews Sisters]." Originally performed by the trio in their feature film Give Out, Sisters, the Andrews' recording reached No. 17 in August 1942. After 'Beer Barrel Polka" (1939 of Historic Hits Tour), the PENNSYLVANIA POLKA is probably the best-known polka in the United States. This rambunctious dance tune has been recorded by Horace Heidt, Frankie Yankovic and Lawrence Welk (among others).

Also in 1957, RED SAILS IN THE SUNSET by Tab Hunter was released in February and reached peak chart position #58.

Duke Ellington and Sonny Rollins and Dizzy Gillespie recorded ON THE SUNNY SIDE OF THE STREET.

John Coltrane and Paul Quinichette recorded EXACTLY LIKE YOU .

Frank Sinatra with Nancy Sinatra & The Tri-Tones recorded SIDE BY SIDE .
