Big band leader Russ Morgan co-wrote the wistful ballad SO LONG [performance by Ruth Brown] in 1940, the year it became the debut hit of The Charioteers, a Cincinnati-based vocal group. The Four Aces also scored with the song in 1954, but it was Ruth Brown, in her recording debut for Atlantic Records in 1949, who sang the definitive version. Brown's torchy delivery helped push the tune to the No. 6 spot on the Billboard R&B chart. Three other important versions of have turned up on the R&B hit parade over the years: those by Johnny Moore's Three Blazers (1946), Fats Domino (1956) and Roy Hamilton (1957). Pat Benatar also recorded this song in 1991.
