A highlight of the London musical "New Faces," the poignant romantic ballad A NIGHTINGALE SANG IN BERKELEY SQUARE [performance by Glenn Miller] was introduced in the United Stated in 1940. The song became an immediate success for four recording artists who scored Top 20 hits with it in 1940 and 1941: British bandleader Ray Noble, "Swing and Sway" conductor Sammy Kaye, Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians and Glenn Miller (whose version rose to No. 2 and is featured here). More recently, Manhattan Transfer released a stand-out a cappela treatment of this classic.
