Legendary jazz vocalist Billie Holiday recorded I'M GONNA LOCK MY HEART (And Throw Away The Key) [performance by Billie Holiday] with pianist Claude Thornhill in New York on June 23, 1938. A cynical song about love's pitfalls, it became a No. 2 hit on the popular record charts later that year.

Cowboy star Gene Autry wrote YOU'RE THE ONLY STAR (in My Blue Heaven) [performance by Gene Autry] in 1938 and performed it in three of his films (The Old Barn Dance, Mexicali Rose and Rim Of The Canyon).
