Eight separate recordings of RED SAILS IN THE SUNSET [performance by Guy Lombardo] have been Top 40 hits in the U.S.A. since this British song was introduced in the U.S. by Guy
Lombardo and His Royal Canadians in 1935. Lombardo's version stayed at
No. 1 for four weeks; Bing Crosby's also went to No. 1 that December. Other
hit versions have been recorded by Louis Armstrong (1936), Nat "King" Cole
(1951), The Platters (1960) and Fats Domino (1963). The Beatles were performing this song onstage in 1962 at the Star Club in Hamburg, Germany, before
they became a household name around the globe.
